About the Movie

Academy Award® winner Kevin Spacey (AMERICAN BEAUTY) directs and stars in this gripping biopic of one of America’s greatest performers, Bobby Darin. Working his way from shady nightclubs to his dream destination, The Copacabana, Darin lived a rags-to- riches life. He was a marvel at singing, songwriting, and performing such hits as “Splish Splash,” “Mack the Knife” and more, stealing the hearts of fans everywhere – despite the suffering of his own heart.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Many people under 40 may not even remember Bobby Darin, let alone know about his remarkable life story. Beyond the Sea may rectify that problem and stand as a wonderful tribute to an amazing talent who left us all too soon. – Paul Clinton (CNN.com), CNN.com, Jul 9, 2007

Rotten: Your standard biopic boilerplate, with a lot of self-reflexive hokum. – Wesley Morris, Boston Globe, Jan 15, 2005

Rotten: This vainglorious biopic about Bobby Darin is really about what the '60s pop singer and actor means to Kevin Spacey. – Desson Thomson, Washington Post, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: If Spacey's age problem proves an insurmountable distraction for literalists and Darin fans, his admirers will no doubt relish the chance to watch him sing, dance and basically take over the screen for two hours. – Ann Hornaday, Washington Post, Jul 16, 2008

I love this movie!

Musical biographies are my favorite movie genre, so I was very excited to watch Beyond the Sea, even though I knew little about Bobby Darin (he was before my time). Wow, was I impressed with Kevin Spacey's performance and singing! He has an amazing voice! The music was AWESOME for this movie. I enjoyed the glimpse into Bobby Darin's courageous activism work during the Vietnam era. I loved John Goodman, Bob Hoskins, and Kate Bosworth. Highly recommended!

amazing journey into the brilliance of Kevin Spacey and Bobby Darin

This movie is an incredible showcase of the brilliance and beauty which lives in Kevin Spacey’s heart and being. Bright, sharply sardonic and deeply tender, Kevin Spacey plays his roles ingeniously and one marvels at the privilege it must be to truly all of him. I missed this beauty when it was released and only learnt of and saw it now. This movie also of course showcases the fascinating and moving behind-the-scenes life of another bright soul….a Twofer!
