About the Movie

Executive produced by Brad Pitt, Big Men follows what happens when a Texas oil firm makes an enormous discovery off West Africa’s coast. Gaining unprecedented access to reveal big business in oil, it took six years to make and takes viewers around the world, from inside Wall Street boardrooms to the jungle camp of a Nigerian militant group. Director Rachel Boynton has an incredible ability to go behind closed doors; her access is critical when Kosmos Energy makes its enormous discovery. Christened the Jubilee Field, this massive undersea deposit had the potential to return a staggering $2. 2 billion to investors. Big Men is a story told from the inside, as it happens, not reconstructed once the dust settles. Called “a real-life Chinatown or There Will Be Blood” by Variety critic Scott Foundas, this extraordinary film poses fundamental questions about what motivates us all: Is unbridled greed an intrinsic part of human nature? And can what unites us ever be greater than what divides us?

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Dropping us into a perfect storm of avarice, this cool and incisive snapshot of global capitalism at work is as remarkable for its access as for its refusal to judge. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Mar 13, 2014

Fresh: This moral-economic drama plays out in backroom deals that Boynton records in all their stunning and at times shameless candor. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Apr 4, 2014

Fresh: When on-the-ground reality is conveyed with the complexity and fascination it is here, unforgettable documentaries are always the result. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Jun 13, 2013

Fresh: Fanon would have said that eventually "the wretched of the earth" will wake up and learn their lesson. If this vivid, compassionate but unstinting film is any indication, Rachel Boynton is not convinced. – Andrew O'Hehir,, Mar 14, 2014

Amazing Balance

I bought this movie as a research vehicle for the work I do with oil & gas companies. Understandably I was skeptical that this would just be another "bash the oil companies" documentary. What I found rather was an incredibly well told story with a microscopic view into this secret world! The risks that these companies take somewhat justifies their returns. On the other hand, the amount of wealth that ultimately makes its way down to the people in these remote countries is almost criminal. Corruption in these local governments is the true injustice and it's quite disheartening to think that the lives of these people could be so drastically improved if they could benefit from the natural resources they're living right on top of. All in all, definitely worth the price of admission.

Well made, important Doc, must see

Surprisingly, this is a gripping tale of something that seems complex. The director doesn’t take the easy road, and examines all of the issues and sides and makes a very compelling film about backroom dramas that has earned kudos for good reason - how often do you see 100% tomato-meter?

Big Men is a Must-see!

This is a fascinating deep-dive into the oil economy. Compelling, tragic and extremely well-done.
