Plot Summary

Jennifer Venditti's award-winning documentary is a provocative coming-of-age story—an odyssey into the soul of an American teenager. Following fifteen-year-old Billy as he wanders through the quiet streets of small town Maine, we watch him grapple with isolation and first-time young love as he traverses the frustrating gap between imagination and reality. By turns exhilarating and disturbing, and featuring an electrifying soundtrack by KISS and a host of emerging indie artists, Billy the Kid captures an intimate view of an expressive and seemingly fearless outsider.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The documentary Billy the Kid presents the world according to a troubled teenager in Maine. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: Billy the Kid, a movie that's as interesting as it is dewy-eyed, may be the rare snapshot of an adolescent 'outcast' who is really the guy made for fame, with a built-in radar for how to present himself in front of the camera. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Billy's resilience, though, is nothing short of amazing. Not to mention part of growing up. – Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times, Oct 18, 2008

Rotten: The rough and ready filmmaking technique makes it challenging for the viewer at times, and perhaps a stricter editing discipline could have tightened the film – Andrew L. Urban, Urban Cinefile, Jun 24, 2010
