Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The millions who died during this real-life tragedy deserve a stronger memorial than this one. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Feb 23, 2017

Rotten: While "Bitter Harvest" will undoubtedly serve to raise awareness, there can be no doubt that the events deserve a more compelling and responsible treatment than this. – Peter Debruge, Variety, Feb 23, 2017

Rotten: Given the scope of the early-1930s atrocity, the most shocking thing about director George Mendeluk's new dramatization is how utterly devoid of emotional impact it is. – Sheri Linden, Los Angeles Times, Feb 23, 2017

Rotten: Teaching important history to younger generations via popular culture is always a worthy cause. It's just that soaking this sobering story in a soppy romance does little to advance that cause. – Jocelyn Noveck, Associated Press, Feb 23, 2017

This is an excellent film and generally historically accurate. Beware of the negative reviews - I read the Washington Post review by Michael O'Sullivan. Read it, and make sure you read all the comments. If you read the about Soviet Russia REsearch the Ukrainian famine in the Black Book of Communism. (Ominous title but very serious history - and it is on line). Also there is plenty to read on the internet about it. A good number books on Amazon. The film puts it together artfully and with the human dimension. The performances are very good. Hard to believe there are still apologists around for Stalin.

Bitter Harvest

Excellent historical fiction helping to highlight the plight of Ukrainian starvation at the hands of communist Stalin in the early 1930's. Covered up by The Soviet Union, it was finally uncovered in 1991 and acknowledged in 2003. Much like the Holocaust, Holodomor literally means complete and total death by starvation. It is estimated that 7-10 million Ukrainians died as a result of Stalins search for power. Great movie and excellent introduction to a history many have never heard.

2 thumbs up...

A very very well made movie. It depicted accurately the history, the lives, the struggles of the Ukrainian people and the bullying of Russia which still exist to this day. Fortunately, I ignored those rotten tomatoes reviews and proceeded to rent this movie.
