Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Like any good work of history, "The Black Panthers" sticks close to the facts, plotting complex events into a packed, fast-moving timeline and leaving to the viewers the work of drawing lessons and analogies for our own time. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Sep 1, 2015

Fresh: Nelson understands the play of outsized personalities and unexpected events, and he's helped that enough time has passed for former Panthers to feel comfortable telling their stories, especially to someone of Nelson's stature in the documentary world. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Sep 24, 2015

Fresh: Joining some other recent histories about black Americans fighting powers that are too rarely held accountable to them, the film continues a discussion whose present-day relevance is painfully, increasingly obvious. – John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter, Aug 31, 2015

Fresh: Look at what they fought for, look at how strongly their resistance was resisted, think about how familiar the police brutality they exposed still is today. – Alan Scherstuhl, Village Voice, Sep 1, 2015

Black Panthers: Vangards of the Revolution

You need the see this documentary to understand how the Black Panther Party shifted and helped change the course of Black America.

Terrible

Very bad, don't waste your money of time

Exceptional & Heartbreaking

Having come of age during this period, I can remember with informed clarity of the rise and fall of the Panthers. They were much admired, by both blacks and whites for their understanding of the law and how they could use it to eradicate oppression, and also for the affection they had for black people. They were what you wanted a parent to be—protective, always ready to defend you, but also loving enough to cook you breakfast in the morning.

They were attacked by J Edgar Hoover, who feared and hated black people as a general rule. The illegality of his goon squads played out in the assassination of Fred Hampton & Mark Clark. I lived in Chicago then, & the murder generated a revolution as black people stood in long lines to vote out SA Hanrahan, a rehearsal for the commitment required to elect Mayor Harold Washington later on. Terrific documentary, masterful.
