About the Movie

Set within the world of global cybercrime, BLACKHAT follows furloughed convict Nicholas Hathaway (Chris Hemsworth), and his American and Chinese partners as they hunt a high-level cybercrime network from Chicago to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta. As Hathaway closes in, the stakes become personal as he discovers that the attack on a Chinese nuclear power plant was just the beginning. Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral) directs the propulsive action-thriller.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Hints of a quasi-apocalyptic chill seem arbitrary-neither symbolic nor dramatic. The effect is like watching software run itself. – Richard Brody, New Yorker, Feb 2, 2015

Rotten: Another silly cyber-thriller, almost saved by an intense Hemsworth and some bruising action. – Rafer Guzman, Newsday, Jan 16, 2015

Rotten: Nobody can top Mann's urban night scenes, with their oily neon and skyscraper light grids, but for the most part this plays like Heat without the heat. – J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader, Jan 23, 2015

Rotten: About as thrilling and current as a first-generation Atari game system, an exercise in sleek redundancy where words like "malware" and are supposed to generate shivers of excruciating anticipation. – Geoff Pevere, Globe and Mail, Jan 16, 2015

Great second-tier Michael Mann

Blackhat is a beautifully-made, if somewhat slowly-paced, action drama. The story is interesting, the cinematography is inspired, and the action sequences are visceral and unnerving. While it doesn’t rise to Mann’s best films, it is absolutely worth watching. The 30% Rotten Tomatoes rating is ridiculous.

Michael Mann has directed some truly great action dramas (Heat, Last of the Mohicans) and several very good ones (Thief, Manhunter, Collateral), but he has fallen out of critical and audience favor with his recent films (Public Enemies, Miami Vice), which use very unconventional editing and seem a bit too comfortable with their flaws. But much of that criticism goes too far. All of his films are rendered beautifully and his action set pieces are a welcome dose of realism in an era of absurd CGI stunts. He remains Hollywood's best director of neo-noir films.

Literally loved it

This movie is great and IGNORE THE BAD REVIEWS ONLINE. This is well money spent and I can't wait till it comes out on iTunes!!

Michael disappoints 1st time ever!

i have no idea how he - legendary Michael Mann - could do this movie! its boring boring and boring and sometimes even ridiculous. NSA top manager opens pdf attachment with maleware. only 2 short sequences are brillant. not enough… i prefer Collateral a 10th time!
