About the Movie

An ex-mercenary turned smuggler (Leonardo DiCaprio). A Mende fisherman (Djimon Hounsou). Amid the explosive civil war overtaking 1999 Sierra Leone, these men join for two desperate missions: recovering a rare pink diamond of immense value and rescuing the fisherman's son, conscripted as a child soldier into the brutal rebel forces ripping a swath of torture and bloodshed across the alternately beautiful and ravaged countryside. Directed by Edward Zwick (Glory, The Last Samurai), this urgent, intensely moving adventure shapes gripping human stories and heart-pounding action into a modern epic of profound impact.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: DiCaprio proves himself the most watchful and watchable actor of his age. – TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Thanks to Mr. DiCaprio's raffishly dashing soldier of fortune, the movie is worth watching. – Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: The more I see of their work, the more I realise that directors Ed Zwick and Sam Mendes have one thing very sharply in common -- both are filmmakers who make movies that they think are far more important than they actually are. – Garth Franklin, Dark Horizons, Apr 5, 2011

Fresh: Both excitingly well made and dispiritingly formulaic. – David Edelstein, New York Magazine/Vulture, Feb 8, 2010

Well Done

In the midst of bubble-gum, pop oriented movies, Blood Diamond breaks away from the typical and displays an ongoing reality outside of our borders. The acting was superb as well as the directing, you can't help but get drawn in to the movie from beginning to end.

Conflict Diamonds are Evil

I thought this movie was really interesting, and shows how far people will go for precious stones. it's sad seeing all the child soldiers in Africa struggle against each other, fueled by conflict diamonds
