Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: This is a fascinating picture, which has something real to say about the matter of personal involvement and emotional commitment in a jazzed-up, media-hooked-in world so cluttered with synthetic stimulations that natural feelings are overwhelmed. – Bosley Crowther, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: There may be some meaning, some commentary about life being a game, beyond what remains locked in the mind of film's creator, Italian director-writer Michelangelo Antonioni. But it is doubtful that the general public will get the 'message' of this film. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: A prize '60s artifact, Michelangelo Antonioni's what-is-truth? meditation on Swinging London is a movie to appreciate -- if not ponder. – J. Hoberman, Village Voice, Feb 4, 2013

Fresh: The natural world is arrayed against the artificial scene; conscience is deployed against convention. If you've never seen Blow-Up, see it now, if only to see what part of the world was like 40 years ago. – Andrew Sarris, New York Observer, Jun 24, 2010

Antonioni on iTunes?!?!?! Did not see that coming. Way to go!!

Definitely did not search for Antonioni on iTunes expecting something to actually come up. This is a brilliant film and is the second of Antonioni's color films. Suggestive and provacative upon its' release, it gives a look at a photographers life in the 60s counterculture of London. It reminds me very much of Hitchcock's Rear Window or Coppolla's The Conversation, two other fine films. If you like this, check out other Antonioni films such as Red Desert or L'Avventura. Great stuff!

FInally, some real films on iTunes

It's great that iTunes is beginning to offer some classic art films, such as this, La Dolce Vita, and Blue Velvet. This is the content I've been waiting for, and I really hope to see more of it. This is an avant garde film, so it will not appeal to many fans of mainstream Hollywood movies. Antonioni's style is highly unconventional, relying on long, drawn-out shots and meaningful silences with no music or dialogue. This is what is being described as "poor editing" by some of the other reviewers. Don't be fooled by the people ignorantly trashing a modern masterpiece - this is a beautiful film and essential viewing for any film buff. It just requires an open mind and some patience to absorb Antonioni's meditation on media and the disconnected modern world. This film rewards thoughtful viewing.

In My Top Ten - it's number one.

This movie is not about passive "entertainment". It is about challenging concepts, every frame aesthetically composed and the lead actor, David Hemmings, a combination of ethereal physical beauty and ruthlessness.
It is still studied in film school today.
