About the Movie

Blue Chips scores as "the best sports movie in years!" (Jeffrey Lyons, Sneak Previews). Championship-winning coach Pete Bell (Nick Nolte) runs the cleanest program in collegiate basketball. But when he finds himself on the brink of his first losing season, Bell decides he must make a risky trade to protect his job: under-the-table dollars for talent. Betraying his conscience and the trust of his ex-wife (Mary McDonnell), bell signs the nation's "blue chips": a farmboy forward (Matt Nover), a playmaking guard from the projects (Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway), and Neon Bodeaux (1993 NBA rookie of the year Shaquille O'Neal), a 7-foot slam-dunking phenom from the bayou. Now Bell has the best team money can buy... but is he prepared to pay the price?

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: If Mr. Friedkin didn't have to work so strenuously framing two-shots of Mr. Nolte with this seven-foot athlete, it might be hard to remember that Mr. O'Neal has a day job. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: A deafness-inducing but otherwise ho-hum would-be expose of shady recruiting practices by college basketball programs. – Todd McCarthy, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: The filmmakers don't get the ball into the Shaq-man's hands enough -- both literally and figuratively -- to make this personable giant's screen debut memorable. – Hal Hinson, Washington Post, Mar 25, 2008

Rotten: If it wasn't for some exciting roundball action, Shaquille O'Neal's hulking-dunking presence and a wonderfully guttural performance from coach Nick Nolte, you'd slither off the bench asleep. – Desson Thomson, Washington Post, Mar 25, 2008

One good sports movie

Nick Nolte lights up the screen. Real life drama on the big screen.

I really can't tell you if either blue chips or glory road but it's a pretty darn sports movie.

Great March Movie

Awesome movie if your a sports fan especially during March madness or just enjoy some drama and a quick look into the ins and outs of a shady recruiting operation that most likely still goes on to this day at major programs. Shaq and Penny and the rest of the cast especially Nolte were awesome!!!!!
