Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Though the film dawdles a bit with the shimmery, dappled love stuff involving Wallace with a Scottish peasant and a French princess, the action will pin you to your seat. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Feb 24, 2014

Fresh: A huge, bloody and sprawling epic, Braveheart is the sort of massive vanity piece that would be easy to disparage if it didn't essentially deliver. – Brian Lowry, Variety, Feb 27, 2018

Fresh: As a filmmaker, [Gibson] lacks the epic gift, but the movie, scripted by Randall (no relation) Wallace, works on a fairly basic level as a hiss-the-English medieval Western. – Peter Rainer, Los Angeles Times, Feb 24, 2014

Rotten: In the absence of satisfying moral dilemmas, Braveheart is an action film with an unhappy ending rather than the tragedy it would like to be. – Adam Mars-Jones, Independent (UK), Mar 1, 2018

Great movie

This movie is awsome. i honestly can watch it 5 times and not get bord. and uh... yeah that my comment... wuhwhoo!

A Grand, Epic Film of Love and Revenge...

Mel Gibson is a great crafter, even if he's controversial, you cannot deny his talents. Sure, Braveheart may be historically inaccurate at times, but we get a grand tale worthy of a little misplacing here and there. The acting is great. You cannot argue. The writing is inspirational. I'm sure everyone's favorite line is "Freedom!" but what it really succeeds in that many films fail in, are the delivery speeches before a battle. Great dialogue, and a great story. The directing is very good, but not exactly award-worthy in my opinion. The art direction and costumes are very well done. Though the chain-mail isn't convincing, and some of the outfits -- mainly the English -- don't exactly have the loviest nor detailed getups. Overall, this is a great film. It's epic, and William Wallace's story is purely great entertainment. Worth a rent/buy.
