Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The star and co-writer of Bridesmaids, Kristen Wiig, puts herself and her female co-stars through the comedy wringer.
Fresh: Through a combination of smart performances and scurrilous gags Bridesmaids yanks the buddy comedy from the hands of its traditional owners.
Fresh: The big, brash laughs are coupled with a smart insight into women's friendships.
Fresh: [Wiig's] is the comedy of panic, paranoia, madness and self-loathing, but her trick in the new film Bridesmaids is to remain composed even as her heart is shredded to confetti.
A TRUE COMEDIC GEM!
Before I start this review, let me just get one thing straight. I'm a guy who's never really cared to see (let alone talk about) any "chick flicks" whatsoever. With the movie "Bridesmaids", however, I can easily make an exception. You see, a friend of mine (who happens to be a girl) was begging me for some time to see this film with her a few weeks after it was released. There was a lot of word of mouth about how good the movie was, plus it was produced by Judd Apatow (the king of R-rated comedies), so I ultimately relented to go see it. Little did I know that for two straight hours, I would be sitting through arguably one of the funniest and genuinely touching comedies of the decade! First off, I was surprisingly blown away by the award-worthy performance of Kristin Wiig. I knew she was a talented comedian based off of her work on SNL and countless theatrical comedies, but I had no idea she could be so sentimental. Her role as Annie, a thirty-something single woman whose life has spiraled completely out of control is so sympathetic, you just wanna jump through the screen to give her a hug. Her problems only grow worse when she's asked to be one of the bridesmaids at the wedding of her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph), who also gives a knock-out performance. And let's just say hilarity ensues! From a disastrous turn of events at a gown shop to a hilariously chaotic bridal shower, there's nothing that Annie, Lillian, and the bridesmaids don't face! Aside from the outrageously vulgar comedy, the movie also focuses on the unexpected love interest between Annie and an Irish cop (Chris O'Dowd), which I actually found surprisingly interesting. If I had to say there was a downside to this film, it would only be that Tim Heidecker (from "Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!") starred as Lillian's soon-to-be husband, but never spoke one line of dialogue, NOT ONE! But, other than that, I really can't say anything bad about "Bridesmaids". It's a thoroughly enjoyable, laugh-out-loud comedy that appeals to both genders. Take it from a guy's perspective! In the end, I think it's safe to say that this is the best R-rated all-female ensemble you're likely to see this year, or this decade for that matter!
I wouldn't go to far as to call it a chick flick
This is hands down the funniest movie of the year, and it was written by females too(which is unusual)! i mean kristen wiig is hands down the funniest woman alive. i truly didn't want to see this because i thought it was going to be a cheesy romantic comedy. But on rotten tomatoes, 90% of critics liked it. Lets also not forgot that judd apatow is the producer!!
