Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: When a film is as enjoyable as this one, its timing so sweet, and its atmosphere conjured with such skill, do you really wish to register a complaint? Would it help?
Fresh: Authentic re-creations of the period, including duck-and-cover clips about a nuclear holocaust that frightened young students, serve as a reminder of a time, not unlike our own, when the threat of terror kept a steady and disturbing beat.
Fresh: Bridge of Spies is a warm portrait of a friendship, an excitingly intricate story of realistically scaled suspense, and a visually ravishing and lovingly crafted rendering of mid-century America, where how you look matters much less than what you do.
Fresh: The genius of the casting is in the contrast: Hanks, the richly sympathetic screen actor, and Rylance, no less colossal a talent but one comparatively untried in cinema.
Spirits of Americans
There are all kinds of beauty of arts. Some of them need knowledge, peace and magnanimity to enjoy. This movie is surely one of the kind.
The plot may be very simple, but from performance, music, context symmetry and spiritual echoes come masterpiece. And that is what filming is all about.
Patriotism and bravery is never spoken, but is done. That is what James Donovan did, as a standing man on his hold.
An Inspiring Tale
Set during the Cold War, New York lawyer James Donovan (Hanks) is hired to defend a convicted Russian spy (Rylance) but with little support from his work associates, makes for a difficult defence. Soon Donovan comes up wih a plan to negotiate the release of a U-2 spy plane pilot who has now been captured by the Soviets in exchange for the Russian spy he defended in court.
Great plot with an amazing cast including Hanks who slips right into his role as usual. Though Mark Rylance took me by surprise and loved his character. The two actors worked well together and a surprisingly good score by Thomas Newman who took the movie to a new level.
Bridge of Spies is very engrossing and a thoughtful watch.
Look for the different ways the spies are treated in their foreign countries.
