Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: No one here seems to notice that there's not much going on, including Mr. Stallone, which somehow makes it easier to watch.
Fresh: Bullet to the Head doesn't try to adapt its star to 2013. It just pretends that we're still living in 1986. And for 91 minutes, it just about works.
Rotten: Sylvester Stallone shoots people in the face. That's it for subtext in this formula action swill. Why do I sound like I should expect more. Because the credits list the director as Walter Hill.
Fresh: "Bullet to the Head" is an adrenaline shot to your movie memory if the blunt, gleefully dumb, no-nonsense ways of '80s-style action flicks are your nostalgia drug of choice.
A GLEEFULLY TRASHY ACTION ROMP
"Bullet to the Head" is basically all that you'd expect from a Sylvester Stallone film: campy acting, mindless action, and plenty of gratuitous violence. In other words, it's the perfect film for any fan of cheesy '80s blockbusters, but that's not to say a film as silly as this is without its distracting problems here and there. Directed by Walter Hill ("The Warriors," "48 Hrs") and based on a French graphic novel, the story follows Jimmy "Bobo" (Stallone), a tough, no-nonsense New Orleans hitman who forms an unexpected alliance with by-the-book detective Taylor Kwon (Sung Kang) to take down the ruthless killers of their respective partners. Rampant bloodshed and over-the-top fight sequences ensue. From start to finish, this film is jam-packed with a ton of memorable and surprisingly clever references that date way back to Stallone's cinematic past. Whether it's the unapologetically trashy, easily quotable one-liners he utters with a straight face or just his signature macho man persona, there's no doubt that Sly's performance here is an over-the-top embodiment of what made his action movies so ridiculously enjoyable in the first place. And while no one else in the cast comes close to matching the delightfully corny acting of Stallone, they're still interesting in their own way. Sung Kang gives a decent-enough performance as the sidekick to our hero, and the surprisingly strong "buddy" chemistry they share throughout the flick is constantly fun and engaging. But I'd be lying if I didn't say Jason Momoa stole the show for me as the merciless killer who inevitably ends up facing off against Stallone in an epic fight to the death. His scenes alone are so visceral and excessively violent that they're almost enough to forgive Momoa for his regrettable performance in the terrible 2011 remake of "Conan the Barbarian." But I digress. So in the end, even if "Bullet to the Head" does suffer from its bland plot, contrived characters, and uneven pacing more often than not, it's still a perfectly decent guilty pleasure of an action film that stays consistently enjoyable thanks to its big, adrenaline-fueled fight sequences, corny humor, and energetic cast. At the very least, it's worth a one-time rent for any longtime fan of Stallone.
ONE OF STALLONE'S BEST!!!
Bullet to the Head??? Yes I agree. The title is not the best. You can ask Sylvester Stallone himself and he will agree on that too. But if you forget about the title, you are in for a SOLID ACTION Packed movie. Stallone gives an incredible performance. It is fun, loud, explosive, sexy and also funny. I consider it one of my favorite Stallone movies and I totally recommend it. Walter Hill does a great job directing the film.
Once again Sylvester Stallone has entertained me and thats more than what I can ask for. Thanks Sly!!!!
