Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: The actors aren't unhinged enough for the scathing conceit, and the script is more of a mechanism than a revelation.
Rotten: Pitt invests the vague, cranky relationship with his usual intelligence and restraint, but the movie is destined to rank with such celebrity-couple fiascos as Gigli (2003) and Shanghai Surprise (1986).
Rotten: The point to all this seems to be life is cruel and people are jerks, but sometimes very good-looking jerks. Deep.
Rotten: What are the artistic purposes for this tedious collection of frowning, drinking, bickering, peeping and smoking scenes? "By the Sea" is long on perverse images but short on ideas.
A movie only to be seen by intellectuals
Great film! Yes, it moved slow, but obviously it was done so one would get to know the characters. Sorry it's not unrealistic action every 10 minutes. Small minds need to be spoon fed visual stimuli but this was beautifully written and directed. If you can't grasp the plot, you're missing out.
This was shot beautifully. The music stellar. I really loved the intimacy of the movie. A must see, for true movie goers.
Much better than critics' reviews
In addition to the picturesque setting, pleasant surprises greet the viewer in this throwback of cinema. We really enjoyed watching Jolie and Pitt's arc of character development, the cute old guys in the French coastal town, and of course - the neighbors! Watch the film to find out...
