About the Movie

Viggo Mortensen (The Lord of the Rings series) stars in The New York Times Critics’ Pick, Captain Fantastic, about an unconventional man who raises his six children in the forest of the Pacific Northwest, isolated from society. When he is forced to bring his family out of seclusion and into the world, this leads to a confrontation with his father-in-law (Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon), who wants his grandchildren to have a normal life. Now Ben must question if his methods are the best for his family. Rolling Stone raves, “Viggo Mortensen is magnificent. A career best work.”

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: [It] shines as a sort of wish-fulfillment fantasy for a certain outdoors-oriented mind set, which almost makes up for its over-the-top moments and underwritten characters. – Chris Barton, Los Angeles Times, Nov 21, 2016

Fresh: This is really a movie for upper-middle class hipsters who once fancied themselves firebrands and status quo-challengers in college, but now consider only buying organic food at Whole Foods and not vaccinating their kids to be radical acts. – Leslie Felperin, Hollywood Reporter, Sep 12, 2016

Fresh: There are many tonal plates being spun here; the lack of a deafening crash is impressive. It comes down, you suspect, to the film's embrace of its own contradictions. – Danny Leigh, Financial Times, Dec 28, 2016

Rotten: A more interesting version of the film would allow us to see him as either a flawed but noble hero or a deluded bully on an ego trip. But Ross is too in love with the character not to stack the deck in his favour. – Jake Wilson, The Age (Australia), Sep 9, 2016

He's not a perfect Father but he's trying his best

I love that this film didn't make Viggo's character a perfect man, his children are geniuses and philosophers, they hold a lot of keys to the world that most people could only ever dream of holding, they know so much and so little at same time. It's truly intoxicating to watch children with the knowledge that his have try to navigate the "real" world. This film is quirky and beautiful, it will make you reevaluate everything you ever thought about parenting, family, and our modern way of life.

My favorite movie of all time!

Wow!!! Being from Oregon, that was just a pure joy to watch! This movie touched my soul - what a breath of fresh air. It's nice to be reminded of my roots. Thank you!

Don't watch the trailer

If you want to see the entire movie in a couple minutes, just watch the trailer. Why do they make trailers like that? :(
