About the Movie

LA playboy Dean (Skylar Astin) is fed up with one-night-stands and empty relationships - he wants more out of life than just a party. With a little inspiration from his nine-year-old nephew and his best friend Tess (Camilla Belle), Dean decides to try his hand at finding true love for the first time - which proves to be much more difficult than he thought in modern-day Los Angeles.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Herschel Faber, the writer and director here, didn't bother fleshing out these characters enough to make us give a hoot about them. – Neil Genzlinger, New York Times, Feb 6, 2014

Rotten: An unevolved romantic comedy better suited to the Paleolithic Era. – Geoff Berkshire, Variety, Feb 7, 2014

Rotten: "Cavemen" writer-director Herschel Faber has sketched such a thin and unfunny look at L.A. singles, it should mark the death knell for movies about child-men on the make. – Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times, Feb 6, 2014

Rotten: A screenwriter tries to fall in love in order to lend authenticity to his script about a man falling in love in Cavemen, a tiresome film that itself knows nothing but other rom-com plots. – Nick Schager, Village Voice, Feb 4, 2014

it’s got heart

This film surprised me. The film is an earnest exploration of the meaning of love from a young man’s perspective and unexpectedly philosophical in some of its conclusions. I appreciated the unpretentious directing style and the way Faber got LA to look so New York-y. The humor is gentle and the pacing relaxed and kinda European or something. I think the film just isn’t what it appears to be on the surface. Put me in a warm reflective mood.
