About the Movie

One of America's foremost filmmakers, Kelly Reichardt (Wendy and Lucy, Meek's Cutoff) directs a remarkable ensemble cast led by Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart, and Laura Dern in this stirring look at three women striving to forge their own paths amidst the wide-open plains of the American Northwest: a lawyer (Dern) who finds herself contending with both office sexism and a hostage situation; a wife and mother (Williams) whose determination to build her dream home puts her at odds with the men in her life; and a young law student (Stewart) who forms an ambiguous bond with a lonely ranch hand (radiant newcomer Lily Gladstone). As their stories intersect in subtle but powerful ways, a portrait emerges of flawed, but strong-willed individuals in the process of defining themselves.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: If the characters here are often sparing with their words, or even withholding, the visuals speak volumes. – Leslie Felperin, Hollywood Reporter, Mar 2, 2017

Fresh: As with all of Reichardt's films, the gems are in the smallest moments -- the half smiles, the non-reactions and the silences between two people barely connecting. – Lindsey Bahr, Associated Press, Dec 30, 2016

Fresh: This is not a film of big revelations or ready-made solutions. It's gentle and finely executed storytelling about ordinary people longing for connection and meaning as they face the challenges of another day. – Bruce Demara, Toronto Star, May 18, 2017

Fresh: With the third act, the power of Reichardt's elliptical approach becomes apparent. – Kate Taylor, Globe and Mail, May 19, 2017

Beautiful

This movie is a very slow burn, but it's all worth it in the end. It's a great observation of small town women and the human condition in general.

Terrible

The folks who gave this film five stars clearly didn't watch the movie. One critic said this film was a "slow burn." I'd argue it never caught fire. Rather than create a slow-paced film that comes together in the end, it rambles on for almost two hours to no avail. I'm extremely upset I wasted my time and money on this movie, and I hope my review will save other from making the same mistake.

Certain Boredom !

I can't believe all the great reviews on here. This had to be the most blah depressing film with A-List actors that I have ever seen! Everyone seemed suicidal. Even the picture was fuzzy and colorless. If you rent this film it will be a waste to watch it in HD. Maybe it would be worse in SD! Ugh boring!
