The low Rotten Tomatoes score of this movie is yet another reason why the majority of professional critics on that site should rarely ever be trusted. "Chasing Mavericks" is a terrific sports film for all that it's trying to accomplish: telling the inspirational true story of the late young surfer Jay Moriarty with good-natured humor, emotional depth, and surprising vulnerability. Gerard Butler, Elizabeth Shue, and newcomer Jonny Weston all give solid performances, and Jay makes for a charming, sympathetic protagonist who's easy to root for. As for the surfing scenes, they're some of the best I've ever seen in any film. They're incredibly well-shot and feel richly authentic from start to finish. My only slight issue with this movie is the story, which relies a bit too much on sentimental narrative tactics and well-worn dramatic clichés to get its ultimate message across, but I digress. Nevertheless, "Chasing Mavericks" still holds up remarkably well as both an engaging surf film and a feel-good family flick. Sure, we've seen this type of inspiring tale several times before, but it's never been told in quite the same genuine way as this one. So whether you're a fan of surfing or just wanna watch an inspiring melodrama with memorable characters and some gorgeous cinematography, this film is a great pick. It's definitely no Oscar contender by any means, but at the very least, it's well worth a one-time rent.
