Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Erupting like a scalding geyser from the ground right beneath our feet, Spike Lee's daring, dizzying, sympathetic, symphonic, vital, vehement Chi-Raq is the most urgently 2015 movie of 2015.
Fresh: It's messy in places, as Lee's movies tend to be. But there isn't a moment that Chi-Raq isn't alive. This is a deeply serious, biting picture that also has joy in its heart.
Fresh: It's a teeming repository of ideas-by turns somber and profane, whimsical and hectoring, inspired and inexplicable.
Rotten: You long for "Chi-Raq" to succeed. Sad to report, it's an awkward affair, stringing out its tearful scenes of mourning, and going wildly astray with its lurches into farce.
What is up with the rhyming? Terrible.
Does anybody out there care about us? Please pray for my city.
As someone who grew up in the streets of Chicago I know first hand about the sickening gang violence that has plagued the south side for my entire 27 years. It's a dead zone.Growing up I never even thought of it as Chicago but rather some estrange detached other world, and that other world is now know as Chiraq. Spike Lee has made a film that has penetrated the mass culture by calling attention to the most inhabitable dire environment of any inner city community. Not sure where all the disgust for this film is coming from, but this is tremendously fine film, haven't like a spike lee feature this much since his last great film 25th hour.
This wasn't nominated for best picture??
Give this movie a break people! Baz Luhrmann does Shakespeare in LA and no one says anything about it, Spike Lee does Aristophanes in Chicago and no one seems to get past the stylization. Could it be the ratings on this film are reflective of the problems discussed in it? As the film points out we all need to WAKE UP!! I think this movie should be watched by all Humans! I can't believe the Oscars snubbed this film in every category, shame on the Academy! They continue to deny the existence of well made films by black artists, this must change!! Give this film a chance! It made me laugh and cry and think. Things any good piece of art does. I bought it and will watch it again! Thanks for the joint Spike!!
