Plot Summary

No children. No future. No hope. In the year 2027, eighteen years since the last baby was born, disillusioned Theo (Clive Owen) becomes an unlikely champion of the human race when he is asked by his former lover (Julianne Moore) to escort a young pregnant woman out of the country as quickly as possible. In a thrilling race against time, Theo will risk everything to deliver the miracle the whole world has been waiting for. Co-starring Michael Caine, filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron's Children of Men "Lifts you to the rafters, transporting you with the greatness of its filmmaking. The action is swift, ferocious and spectacularly choreographed." (The New York Times)

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Thrilling, important, and invigoratingly bleak, Children of Men is one of the very best movies to come out in 2006. – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Sep 7, 2011

Fresh: Even if you don't buy the main conceit, the scumbled texture of the movie makes it feel not just plausible but recognizable, and Cuaron takes care never to paint the future as consolingly different. – Anthony Lane, New Yorker, Jan 2, 2007

Fresh: It's a wow. – David Edelstein, New York Magazine, Jan 9, 2007

Fresh: While it's best to know as little as possible about this movie going into the theater, the story is so fast-paced that you won't be thinking about this review or any other. – Peter Hartlaub, San Francisco Chronicle, Dec 30, 2006

an instant classic

children of men deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as classic sci-fi films like blade runner, 12 monkeys and 2001. like good science fiction, children of men reflects modern society and challenges the viewer to examine their own beliefs and suppositions. where children of men starts to separate from the pack and join the elite of science fiction is in its meticulously crafted vision of the future; though littered with science fiction conventions and gee-whiz technology it never takes center stage the focus is always on the plot and characters. throw in faultless acting and some stunning directing work for cuaron and you've got one of the better films of the last few years.

What if things changed? I mean really changed...

This film gets down to the bottom line. It depicts a completely credible (and possible) future with startling intensity. We're all hardwired for this, so any adult is a member of the potential audience. I have rarely seen a picture that explores the "human condition" in such a sensitive, brutal, and thought provoking manner. I realize that superlatives are used a lot on this site, but this truly is a great film. Well worth the money.

Another string to his bow!

Clive Owen ranks as one of the best actors of this generation and Children of Men validates his standing amongst the greats. He travels under the hollywood hype radar and keeps banging out great movies, like this. His sense of realism is what makes this movie so good, he, in my opinion even outshines the great Sir Michael Caine, who co-stars alongside him. An incredible movie with a thoughtfully shocking story line, that encapsulates the fate of mankind while depicting the archaic and current treatment of immigrant populations. Great story, great acting, must see!
