Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Mr. Russell and Mr. Jordan are as likable as their characters, but it's Mr. DeHaan who pulls you uneasily in.
Fresh: Based on Chronicle, it's clear that Trank has the right stuff to move up to big-budget fantasy movies. If he wants to, that is. In a lot of ways, he has already beaten the studios at their game.
Fresh: It's a testament to Trank's capable direction that the movie feels so grounded in reality. There is no sense of the magical in the goings-on, even though what the boys are doing defies logic and gravity.
Rotten: With great power comes the responsibility to make a decent movie, but the mysterious force running through "Chronicle" is the power to supersuck.
THE BEST FOUND FOOTAGE FILM I'VE EVER SEEN!
When I went to see "Chronicle" with my friends on opening weekend, I had somewhat low expectations. Based on the trailers and TV spots, it looked like just another gimmicky found footage sci-fi adventure with unknown teen actors and a generic plot. That couldn't have been any further from the case. In fact, the movie completely transcended every one of its potential clichés to become arguably the most mind-blowing, genre-bending, action-packed motion picture of the year so far.
The story follows three high school students who make an incredible discovery and soon acquire amazing new supernatural abilities beyond their understanding. They can levitate objects with their minds, crush cars at will and even fly. But as the teens learn to control their powers and use them to their advantage, their lives start to spin out of control, and their darker sides begin to take over. It all leads to an explosive, climactic battle sequence over Seattle that'll leave you speechless.
What makes "Chronicle" really work as a whole is that it doesn't attempt to take itself as seriously as every other film in its genre. Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell and Michael B. Jordan give incredibly engaging performances as the three young main characters. They're likable and sympathetic enough for you to care about what happens to them, and the way that they initially deal with their newfound abilities is surprisingly believable. But it's not just the fantastic acting that bring this flick to life. The special effects are amazingly realistic and make you feel like you're really part of the action. Even the found footage element of the story isn't too noticeable to the point of distraction. With its fast-paced direction, smart script and strong sense of creative detail, this movie easily soars above mediocrity and constantly delivers for a truly exhilarating experience.
There wasn't a single moment in "Chronicle" that didn't either have me engaged with the characters or on the edge of my seat. The film took a well-worn idea and turned it into something all its own, and for that, it truly deserves to be recognized as an accomplishment in modern action filmmaking. It may falter narratively at times, but overall, this is an extraordinary movie with fleshed-out characters and a solidly entertaining storyline. If you're a big fan of superhero flicks like me, this is a definite must-see.
This is possibly my favorite movie now. I went into this movie thinking it would be just another found-footage movie, but it's one of the best found-footage movies I've ever seen, and I'm a sucker for these types of movies (Paranormal Activity, Apollo 18, etc.). It's really fun (and sometimes funny) to watch how three teenagers play with their powers and slowly learn how to use them in cooler ways. Throughout the entire movie, I was loving it. It's not boring at all; there's always something cool or entertaining happening. And the climax was amazing; it was the absolute best part of the movie. And I don't know how to categorize this movie. It doesn't have a lot of fighting until the climax, so it's not really an action movie. It's not a serious movie, so it's not really a drama (although it does have some moments that are serious). And it's not laughable throughout, so I wouldn't call it a comedy (but there are a lot of really funny scenes). This is also a very unique movie because it isn't shown through one person's camera; it's shown through a variety of different ones, like security cameras and peoples' cell phones, which adds to the comedic elements. But some things in this movie are never resolved. I was waiting for something to be explained (I won't spoil it) till the credits came on. But all in all, this movie is definitely worth watching, and if you haven't seen it, you're missing out on what could possibly be one the best movies ever made.
This movie was just sooo much fun. It really exceeded my expectations and even made found footage films fun and original again. Dehaan brought a very raw and powerful talent to the screen. His turmoil very real as well as awkward but also compelling. I felt invigorated as I rooted for and against him.
While there are moments you feel it is becoming very serious it still doesn't overly complicate itself by involving pretentious and condescending character flaws.
This movie really satisfies that superhero sci-fi cravings
