About the Movie

The story of Cinderella follows the fortunes of young Ella (Lily James) whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” She will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an apprentice at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit (Richard Madden). Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand, and a kindly beggar woman (Helena Bonham Carter) steps forward and – armed with a pumpkin and a few mice – changes Cinderella’s life forever. A live-action feature inspired by the classic fairy tale, “Cinderella” brings to life the timeless images from Disney’s 1950 animated masterpiece as fully realized characters in a visually dazzling spectacle for a whole new generation.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Nearly a century after that black-and-white cartoon short, and 65 years after a "classic" animated feature that missed the mark, Disney finally got Cinderella right -- for now and, happily, ever after. – Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine, Mar 16, 2015

Fresh: Cinderella is a wonderfully realized family feature that retains the strengths of its source material while at the same time updating it for today's audiences. – James Berardinelli, ReelViews, Mar 15, 2015

Fresh: A very tame live-action retelling of a story everybody already knows. – Nick Dent, Daily Telegraph (Australia), Dec 21, 2015

Rotten: I'm all for confection, but this movie takes that too far. Cinderella and the prince look like they belong on a wedding cake. – Wesley Morris, Grantland, Mar 16, 2015

Favorite Movie!

I just got home from seeing it in theaters & I just pre-ordered it! It is magical. The casting is perfect and the acting is superb!! Great job!

Magical Adaptation!

I loved this movie! I know the Cinderella tale has been told countless times, but this adaptation is probably my favorite of them all. Lilly James easily carries the movie as Cinderella, and she is brilliant. She has a quiet grace and compassion that isn't overdone or overly-dramatic like it could have been. Cinderella's simple yet surprisingly profound message of having courage and being kind will bring you magical moments in your life (your just desserts if you will)) really resonates with me, and the way the movie manifests that idea is dazzling. It is a visually stunning film, and I would be surprised if it wasn't nominated for oscar or two. Those are the aspects of the movie that really stood out to me, and I highly recommend it! :)
