Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A buoyant, bleakly funny comedy chronicling a day's worth of activity at two adjoining stores. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: The film looks no more expensive than it was; some of the acting (by local nonprofessionals) is spectacularly amateurish; the story is a series of anecdotes about hockey, shopping and loving the one you're with. But it's worth loitering in this shop. – Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: A collegiate and post-collegiate laugh fest. – Desson Thomson, Washington Post, Mar 7, 2001

Fresh: Clerks is so utterly authentic that its heroes have never heard of their generation. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

Angst in New Jersey

Great movie. Some of the characters sound like they’re reading their lines from a teleprompter, including Dante, at least in the beginning, but the video store guy Randal is excellent and he made the whole movie worthwhile. Situations and dialogue were decidedly sophomoric & stretched at times, but in some ways that made it all the more amusing.

Dante & Randal: Thank God for Best Friends!

Some movies don't age well. As you get older and look back, not everything holds up to the same scrutiny. Time changes us and our perspectives change accordingly. I might remember watching a movie and really enjoying it a couple of years ago... Watching it now, however, might be a completely different experience. I have gone through this agonizing ordeal more than once in the last few years. Some movies are better than I remember and some are much worse, but the most unlikely scenario is, in fact, the most delightful. It's that movie you remember being really impressed by all those years ago and the one that still holds up to the same quality you remember even after you've been through hell. "Clerks", I am happy to say, is one of those rarities. When I first saw this movie, I was completely blown away. It's not a big-budget Hollywood film, but it definitely rivals them. It's brilliant in every regard, unforgettable, and -- after all I've been through -- it *still* blows me away. It's every bit of what I remember it to be, and I remember it to be one of the best films I have ever seen. It's not for the faint of heart, but if you can take a dirty joke then I would highly recommend you give this movie a chance. It's hilarious, it's endearing, and it's one of my favorite films -- now, until the end of time... And I can say that from experience.
