Bravo| A Magnificent Film

I really love Emma Watson so I was kind of excited about watching this movie. This movie was empowering, amazing, eye opening. Pretty sure that 99% of people who watch this movie had never even heard of Colonia Dignidad. I for one never knew about this. I loved how the woman was the one to sacrifice her freedom to get her true love back.

Congrats Emma Watson! You have done it again you portray a strong and an independent woman who is also a fighter.

This movie shows you the eye opening truth for some countries and how they deal with it.

Misses the mark

After reading a review of Colonia, I couldn’t wait to see it, which I did, this afternoon. It’s terrible. Even the billing is deceitful and sensational: “A young woman's desperate search for her abducted boyfriend that draws her into the infamous Colonia Dignidad, a sect nobody ever escaped from”, kind of like saying that ‘she stands by her man no matter what’ ... a romance of sorts but without the requisite chemistry between the main actors.

The film really says very little about the political climate in Chili and the transition of power and rule from Allende to the tyrannical Pinochet and feels more like a sensational ‘B’ slasher/horror film. It’s terribly unconvincing, and I’m afraid that those who are clueless about the reality of geopolitics will not be enlightened in the least.

There’s a story here that needs telling - about the prison camp and the murderous Pinochet regime - and while the movie does touch on these things, it devotes most of its attention to violence, contrivances and cheap thrills. This could have been a great and compelling political expose.

Well, that was two hours of my life I’ll never get back again. Alas.

Character driven and weird

I'm not sure where all the negative reviews are coming from. It's a nicely done indie piece, made better by Bruhl's work. Watson is good - sorta plays a less intense Hermione character without the magic powers but with the same pluck.
The movie comes across as semi-suspenseful, somewhat of a scary/horror thrill. It doesn't really go either way, which may explain the bad reviews. Ambiguity is a clear reality, here, because the characters are essentially playing other characters to free themselves.
