About the Movie

Gloria (Anne Hathaway) is an out-of-work party girl who, after getting kicked out of her apartment by her boyfriend (Dan Stevens), is forced to leave her life in New York and move back to her hometown where she's reunited with her childhood friend (Jason Sudeikis). When news reports surface that a giant creature is destroying Seoul, South Korea, Gloria gradually comes to the realization that she is somehow connected to this far-off phenomenon. As events begin to spin out of control, Gloria must determine why her seemingly insignificant existence has such a colossal effect on the fate of the world. Experience the wildly original film critics are calling, "a great deal of fun" (New York Times).

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: With a few trims the film could be entirely different and blandly realistic ... But "Colossal" wants more. – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune, Apr 13, 2017

Fresh: Vigalondo extends our modern egotism and entitlement - the idea that my problems are the world's problems - until it becomes the stuff of surreal farce, and then he brings it back down to size. – Ty Burr, Boston Globe, Apr 13, 2017

Fresh: It's a brilliant concept, executed by writer-director Vigalondo with a perfect balance of pop-culture irony and sincere storytelling. – Rafer Guzman, Newsday, Apr 13, 2017

Rotten: Surprisingly bland throughout but still manages to leave a sour taste. – Adam Woodward, Little White Lies, May 19, 2017

Colassal Waste of Time

I bought this to watch with my two pre-teen girls girls, and it did keep them engaged for its too long playing time, but I had to leave after 20 minutes. The leads are excruciating to watch, individually or together. The plot is a pastiche of teenage robot transformer and disfunctional adult relationship movies, filmed in the gray pacific northwest that leaves the viewer much the same as the weather. It plods along, neither engaging the viewer, nor entertaining. Why it's classified as a comedy I cannot image. But I do understand, that with an 80% rating from paid critics, that this world is every day more dreadful, like the internet, and that films (and the reviewers of same) are becoming little more than click bait drivel.
Sad in San Francisco, Si-Fi Lover.

Not really a "romantic comedy"

The preview presents it as a ROMCOM, but it was just weird... not in a good way. I regret spending $14.

I Fell For The Reviews

Stupid, stupid movie. I think the scenes were improv or at least they seemed so - moods and language changing on a dime, herky jerky. Couldn't connect with anyone except maybe the monster. I didn't get the simile or allegory or whatever it was. Nothing was funny in the whole miserable film. Sudekis couldn't decide who his character was - good, bad, monster, baby. He's sure no Anthony Hopkins. Intentionally unlikeable cast.
