Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: It's like a mumblecore movie about a bunch of Sarah Lawrence philosophy majors, made by coked-up rich people for 100 bajillion dollars.
Rotten: The Counselor is the cumbersome end product of a high-minded writer trying to slum and a slick director aiming for cosmic depth.
Rotten: Each scene serves as little more than an index card for the mechanistic plot, which Scott films in a glossy and fluid style befitting an industrial promotion for the movie's high-tech weaponry.
Rotten: It's not so much a bad film as it is a disappointing one. A very disappointing one.
Some of my favorite actors are in this film... I can see why it wasn't promoted. Endless amounts of dizzying dialogue..Wasted talent, no direction, no reason for it... One of the worst films I've seen in a long time. I can hardly believe this made the light of day.
An Entertaining Character Study
While The Counselor received poor critical reviews, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It plays at the speed of a movie like No Country For Old Men, which makes sense because they were penned by the same author. Fantastic performances by all the cast help carry the film, especially since much of it is conversation. When the action occurs, though, it's execution is perfect. This is NOT a popcorn flick. It's an immersive movie, one you should really pay attention to (not because it's confusing, but to fully appreciate the nuances of the film). I would highly recommend watching it, especially if you are a fan of Cormac McCarthy and/or Ridley Scott. Seeing as this was McCarthy's first foray into screenplay writing, I think he did an excellent job. The Counselor has a pristine blend of drama, comedy, action, and romance; all of which twist together into a truly memorable movie. Enjoy!
A truly underrated gem
This is Ridley Scott's best and least derivative film in years. The script is focused on characters, not so much action, and that's where people have been misled. There was a time when films were about characters and ideas, and exploring themes and philosophies, life and death type stuff. That being said, this is a crime film of the most violent order...I thought the performances were solid across the board and the direction to be extremely focused. I wish it had done better in the box office, but like all disregarded films I'm sure this will develop a cult following and be remembered a decade from now as a bright spot in Scott's career.
