About the Movie

“How To Dance Through Time: Volume I - The Romance of Mid 19th Century Couple Dances” (Beginning Level) provides a unique and entertaining lesson for dance lovers. Using famous romantic dance music of the past, this instructional video gives clear “How -To” instructions to help viewers learn to dance the basic steps of the five popular 19th century couple dances: the Waltz, Gallop, Polka, Schottische, and Polka Mazurka. Every step sequence is performed to allow “follow along” repetitions and the exact steps are carefully researched from authentic period manuscripts. In the final section of the videotape, dancers perform these much-loved dances in the appropriate fashions of the era. With this video as a learning tool, everyone is able to dance these famous dances. As with all videos in the How to Dance Through Time series, the dances are introduced with a concise, historical overview and illustrated with authentic photographs and drawings. The steps were carefully researched from period manuscripts and are recreations of historical dances. Close up and slow motion views make learning the moves simple and fun. Dance historian and choreographer Carol Téten is an engaging presence in the series, providing historical context and calling out dance instructions as professional dancers demonstrate. Dancers from the Dance Through Time company perform with authentic music and fashions of the era.

Customer Reviews

As a beginner, this video was extremley confusing. They showed dancers doing the steps very fast. There were no clear insttructions and I found myself crying on mulptible ocassions out of fustration. This video really made me feel like I could not learn the dances. I am still trying to learn to waltz after an hour of practice for about a month and I have not gotten very far. I would reccomend a private teacher to help you learn these dances from the video, but if your like me and wanted a less pricey alternitive, this is not the best option. That being said, it is clear that a lot of love went into the vidoes, I just found them to be extremely confusing and not constructed well.
