Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Dark Places just becomes an overstuffed, low-simmer potboiler with too many improbable detours and overly convenient twists.
Rotten: A convoluted, airless procedural that generates practically no suspense and little that's thematically resonant about lost souls and poisoned memories.
Rotten: "Dark Places" isn't a disaster of a film. Instead, it's the definition of average, and we wish it could have taken us to some more interesting places.
Rotten: Paquet-Brenner wrings the suspense out of "Dark Places" almost from the get-go, with a plodding pace and characters who are meant to be powerfully repressed but only come across as drab.
Now I know why it went straight to video
So boring. Granted this book wasn't nearly as good as Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl. But I had hope for the movie. Though when a film goes straight to video there's clearly a reason why. So dull, no tension whatsoever, and some of the scenes are so poorly shot it's hard to see what's happening. And I think every character each has one facial expression throughout the whole film. Though I somewhat enjoyed the book, I couldn't have cared less what happened to the characters in the movie. Total letdown.
READ THE BOOK
What a disappointment. One of my favorite books of all time turned into a choppy mess. Do yourself a favor and read the book and stay away from the movie. So sad about this!
Forget movie, read the book
I had thought since Gone Girl movie was so much better than the book, that Dark Places being an amazing book would mean the movie was out of this world... I was wrong. Wait for it to hit Netflix. Absolute snooze fest and missing the edge and excitement of the book.
