About the Movie
Academy Award(r) winner Humphrey Bogart is at his best as a hard-boiled sleuth in this '40s film noir classic. In one of his most exciting roles, the inimitable Bogie plays Rip Murdock, an ex-G.I. trying to find out who framed his pal Johnny for murder--and then rubbed him out! Tracing his war buddy's shadowy past leads Rip to Coral Chandler (Lizabeth Scott), who was once Johnny's sweetheart. Now she's a chanteuse in a nightclub run by a brutal gangster, Martinelli (Morris Carnovsky). Rip gets a taste of the beautiful blonde's seductive charms and soon finds himself ensnared in a twisted web of deceit and danger. Is Coral an innocent thrush - or is she a predatory siren leading Bogie to the "Dead Reckoning"?
Epitomizes the genre of 'film noir'
If you had ever wondered what was the source for all of the spoofs of the 1940's film noir, 'private dick' icon then this film was most likely one of them. Humphrey Bogart in his prime, delivering his dialog with the ease of a practiced statesman and yet the subtle menace and intensity of a maniac, and the storyline, sets and supporting characters still manage to create a sense of shock and excitement in an oft copied genre that is due to enjoy a much deserved renaissance and re-appreciation for that art form that it is. Any fan of Humphrey Bogart or the films Dark Passage or The Maltese Falcon would most likely enjoy this film.
