Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The film depicts the worst oil spill in American history and director Peter Berg recreates the cataclysm of that day with unbearable tension and healing compassion. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Sep 30, 2016

Fresh: You can't help marveling at the tightrope the filmmakers walk: honoring their courage and sacrifice while making an action flick entertaining enough to justify the more than $100 million it took to make it come alive on-screen. – Bob Mondello, NPR, Sep 30, 2016

Fresh: In short, Peter Berg has done it again. You come out shaken with excitement, but with a touch of shame, too, at being so easily thrilled. – Anthony Lane, New Yorker, Oct 3, 2016

Rotten: The most positive general attribute about Deepwater Horizon is the authenticity of its action. – Matthew Lowe, FILMINK (Australia), Oct 4, 2016

As true to the crew and family as could be

Being in the Oil and Gas industry, I came to watch this movie with an open mind. If what Mark Wahlberg's crew did, captured even a glimpse of what happened on that rig that day, then I couldn't imagine actually living through it! This movie, not to make light of what happened, but to see it through the eyes of the crew members. It's tragic that 11 people lost their lives in, what seems as a preventable event. It was action packed, and I am glad they made DeepWater Horizon about the crew and not about the damned oil spill. Yes; the oil spill was horrible, but during the time this happened, not too many media outlets were talking about the people affected. They were more concerned with the oil in the water.
This is a much watch movie!

Great Cast, Amazing Movie

I absolutely loved this film, it was captivating and incredibly well produced. It's definitely worth watching. Thumbs up👍🏾👍🏾

real but not real (could contain spoilers)

very entertaining but as someone that has been in the oil industry long before and after this happened, i can tell it was doctored to fit the movie. 1. people don't talk or even cross paths on a heliport. 2. no one not even the OIM goes out of the living quarters with out PPE (thats instant termination) even at the time this happened. 3. a crane could never drop the derrick on that drill ship, no matter how hard it hit it. and there were a lot of other things that made this movie unbelievable. but all in all its an ok movie just not realistic by any means.
