Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Modest but likable effort is packaged in a straightforward style.
Rotten: Stebbings is more interested in deconstructing heroism than creating a concrete world, sapping the movie of the immediacy it needs to come alive. For all its aspirations, the film never meshes into something cohesive or substantial.
Fresh: Saving the day is Harrelson's low-key, rooted performance, adding an unexpected layer of poignancy when things take a decidedly darker turn.
Fresh: Stebbings fills Defendor with humorous bits, comic treats dropped in quickly and without fanfare. It gives the movie a proper pace, well punctuated with laughs at the right time, and outrage and sympathy at others.
defendor more like DEawesome
best movie of the year its hilarious great point because everyone wants to be a super hero (i dont care you know you do) please check this movie out its at least worth a rental p.s. besides the subject please stop listening to modern day pop music its for brain less drones (and im fifteen years old) so dont say "i just dont get it" and check out where the wild things are later
This was NOT what I expected but it turned out to be a really great movie. Woody Harrelson actually topped his Zombieland performance and I liked that movie too!
While the previews make this seem much like the "so-stupid-it's-funny" genre, which seems to be in fashion every few years or so on the indie scene, the actual film is so much more than expected or conveyed by the previews.
Woody Harrelson is probably at his best, with a solid script and storyline to really showcase his talents, as well as his co-stars Elias Koteas and most notably Kat Dennings, who has a bright career ahead of her.
First time director Peter Stebbings has superbly crafted a film that should garner him some attention. I will certainly be watching for his name in the future.
While darkly comedic, the story is more drama than comedy, and certainly not your average super-hero action film, or even the super-hero parody. It is inspirational and moving. While the plot does not break any new ground, and there is no real twist (in fact, the ending is somewhat predictable given the direction the story plays out), that's not a bad thing at all. Overall, the film is a pleasant and rewarding hour and a half.
It's simply a solid character driven story with some strong emotional moments. This film is worth watching more than once - a real keeper.
