About the Movie

Newly arrived from England to marry his fiancee Zaneta (Agnieszka Zulewska, Chemo), Peter (Israeli actor Itay Tiran, Lebanon) has been given a gift of her family’s ramshackle country house in rural Poland. It’s a total fixer-upper, and while inspecting the premises on the eve of the wedding, he falls into a pile of human remains. The ceremony proceeds, but strange things begin to happen…During the wild reception, Peter begins to come undone, and a dybbuk, the iconic ancient figure from Jewish folklore, takes a toehold in this present-day celebration-for a very particular reason, as it turns out. The final work by Marcin Wrona, who died just as DEMON was set to premiere in Poland, is part absurdist comedy, part love story-that scares, amuses, and charms in equal measure.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The film has a powerful undercurrent suggesting the feverish workings of a troubled yet brilliant mind. – Andy Webster, New York Times, Aug 31, 2016

Fresh: Perhaps it's best to appreciate "Demon" not for what it implies but for what it simply and unmistakably is: A bravura testament to a talent silenced far too soon. – Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times, Sep 8, 2016

Fresh: Things head eventually in an abstract direction that may have played better onstage than it does here ("we must forget what we didn't see here," guests are eventually instructed), but a compelling atmosphere lingers. – John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter, Aug 29, 2016

Fresh: It's comedy, as much as the eerie atmosphere and Tiran's very physical performance, that distinguishes Demon from routine ghost stories. – Mark Jenkins, NPR, Sep 8, 2016

Creepy, Cinematic and Funny

This film is such a unique experience -- it is shot beautifully, is creepy without hitting you over the head with sound scares or gross out gore, and is at times funny in a totally organic way. A lot of it is in a foreign language, but if you can deal with that it's worth your time.

Wonderfully different

It always annoys me when people (jaijai4433) give a movie a poor review because they can't handle reading subtitles. This is one of the most creative scary/funny/disturbing/mysterious movie I've seen in a very long time. If you are expecting a normal horror movie and you are a fan of "paranormal activity" type movies you probably won't like this. (I love paranormal activity movies so I'm not dissing those fans, I just am a big movie buff and enjoy all kinds of horror movies)- you might be misled and be disappointed by the title "demon" - I was at first since I was expecting an extremely scary movie - but once you get over that let down if you can watch it and enjoy it for what it is, you'll be happy you did. It's sad, silly, strange, weird, embarrassing, and profoundly disturbing. I still can't figure out the ending though.

Are you serious. I glanced at the ratings and rented this. I could of done this with a small budget at my parents farm house. This movie is awful.
