"Deterrence" is a riveting political thriller that puts the world on the brink of nuclear doomsday...and perhaps pulls the trigger. The year is 2008. During a campaign swing through Colorado, U.S. President Walter Emerson (Kevin Pollak) and his entourage are forced by a freak snowstorm to take refuge in a remote diner. Then comes a shocking news flash: a large Iraqi military offensive has been mounted in the Middle East. From his sudden Colorado command post, the stranded President and his top aides (Timothy Hutton and Sheryl Lee Ralph) must manage a constantly escalating crisis in which moves lead to countermoves, bluffs turn real and the world's fate rides on the outcome.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Having Deterrence unfold on a single set only adds to the film's artificiality.
Rotten: The plot twists fall about as weightily as the fake snow.
Fresh: One of the pleasures of Deterrence is that it does not tell the audience what to think.
Fresh: A very effective updating of the underrated Cold War thriller Fail-Safe.
Underrated and Spectacular!!
I was on the edge of my seat when i watched this! I don't care if it was filmed only on one set, it was filmed from the perspective of the president in the movie. Just like Phone Booth, just like 12 Angry Men, a low budget movie can be absolutely captivating with great acting and a great script. This is in my collection and is totally worth buying!!!!
Seriously, how did I miss this.
This movie was incredible!! I sat on the edge of my sofa the last half of this movie. The best part about this movie - it was done in 1999. There are way too many similarities in what is in the movie and what we are seeing ten years after the making. Scary.
Cast exceptional, premise and script riveting, direction the best. Reminds of "Failsafe" and Kennedy "Bay of Pigs" movie/tv movie done with Martin Sheen - a while ago. Very taut, edge of seat, but politically valid with surprise, twist ending. Great! Can't imagine why this is such a sleeper!!!!
