Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: To experience "Chimpanzee," the latest piece of gorgeously shot pablum from Disneynature, is to endure an orgy of cuteness pasted over some of the most asinine narration ever to ruin a wildlife movie.
Fresh: [It] might as well be called "Simply Irresistible," because thanks to the mischievous monkeyshines of a baby chimp named Oscar, it comes pretty close.
Fresh: The stunning and mostly uncompromising visuals more than compensate for the frequent corny turns of phrase.
Fresh: All audiences stand to be charmed except those grouches who prefer their animals to be valued as animals rather than as furry little people.
A CHARMING DOCUMENTARY ABOUT CHIMPS
"Chimpanzee" is a small, but enlightening nature film that chronicles the story of an adorable, rambunctious young chimp named Oscar. We follow little Oscar as he plays with other chimps his own age and learns how to fend for himself. But when he tragically loses his mother in a twist of fate, Oscar is taken in by an unexpected elderly friend whom he soon shares a close bond with. The story itself is sweet and sentimental, but there are times when it can be anthropomorphized to exhaustion by Tim Allen's unnecessarily silly and self-conscious narration style. However, most young viewers won't seem to mind. What I really have to commend this movie for, though, is its breathtaking cinematography. Every shot feels beautifully intimate, almost as if you've inexplicably been transported to the jungles of Africa and are just now seeing these creatures interact for the first time. They truly are a sight to see, especially in this film. Anyway, I won't go into much more detail about "Chimpanzee". If you enjoy the beauty of nature in its purest form, gentle background music, Tim Allen's voice, and just primates in general, there's a solid chance you'll love this delightful, family-friendly documentary. I give it two opposable thumbs up!
A MUST SEE FOR ALL AGES
This is an extremely well done film! There are a few disturbing scenes for the tender hearted, but overall it's a must see for all ages. Tim Allen was the perfect narrator, the music added a wonderful flavor, and the cinematography was spectacular! Most of all, it's a beautiful story that was captured on film, and should inspire all of us to be more compassionate and lead by example.
Very sweet. Wish the movie was longer.
