Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: It will probably please fans of this simple genre with its solid suspense, murky lighting and "gotcha!" scares.
Fresh: You could treat it as a casual primer on suspense-film craft, or you can just watch through splayed fingers, like the women who sat next to me at the screening I attended.
Fresh: Robbery crews are strongly advised to avoid 1837 Buena Vista, but moviegoers hoping for a thrill might like to visit. But don't linger.
Fresh: The suspense is built as carefully as it is in a good John Carpenter movie; Alvarez uses the camera like a stealth weapon, exploring dark corners and hidden areas of the house with devilish glee.
This is a well made movie ( acting, directing, and shot nicely), but the story was trash. It started off as a good concept, but halfway through it became repetitive and annoying. The ending was too over the top and not in a good way. It literally felt like there was five different endings and none of them worked. Worst of all this movie was never scary sure it had some tense moments but after a while it became laughable. I'm shocked this got such great reviews. It's a shame people are comparing this to "It Follows". Overall Don't Breathe is average, predictable, and forgettable.
There is hope for the horror genre
I have only recommended 2 horror films this year: The Witch and The Conjuring 2. Now, there's Don't Breathe. This is the most insane movie I've seen all year. This movie made me break a personal rule of mine: Don't look away from the screen no matter what. Granted, this film is most definitely not for everyone. Those who do not appreciate more intense and gory films will probably hate this movie, specifically one scene that is one of the nastiest things I've ever seen. However, there is nice blend of suspense and claustrophobia with the intensity and violence. Major props to the dog, too! I highly recommend this movie to people who enjoyed films like The Evil Dead and Panic Room.
Entertaining, but flawed
This is one of those films that is enjoyable on first watch, but depreciates in afterthoughts via some of the typical tropes seen in recent horror box-office hits: jump scares, female-on-male revenge, escaping from situations against all odds, manipulational of the audience to root for someone etc, etc. There also are a few plot holes. On the plus side is the production quality, with claustrophobia crafted well via lighting/angles/color palette. Overall, it is a entertaining, especially to those who aren't yet jaded by formulaic horror.
