About the Movie

Set against the palm tree lined streets of LA, with a playful tone evoking 80’s nostalgia, DREAMLAND follows Monty Fagan (Johnny Simmons), a naïve, wide-eyed, twenty-something piano teacher who can’t get his life or relationship on track. When Monty gets the chance to fill in as the pianist in a swanky hotel bar, he meets Olivia (Amy Landecker), an older, wealthy femme fatale with whom he begins a rather torrid affair. But when Olivia starts to throw some much-needed cash at Monty, he begins to worry that being a kept man will destroy his ability to make it on his own terms. Featuring an excellent ensemble cast, including Jason Schwartzman, Beverly D’Angelo, Frankie Shaw, Nick Thune, and Shay Mitchell.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It's a smart, understated sex comedy, a description that suggests a certain maturity. You'd never suspect it was the first feature from its director, Robert Schwartzman. – Neil Genzlinger, New York Times, Nov 10, 2016

Fresh: What stands out then is the sense of place, which feels like it was drawn directly from Schwartzman's own experiences as a musician and a child of a celebrity. He knows what he wants to show, if not yet what he wants to say. – Noel Murray, Los Angeles Times, Nov 11, 2016

Fresh: Production elements are as solid as the film's acting. – John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter, Nov 7, 2016

Rotten: The sense of a film school student doing movie karaoke with his influences is evident throughout Dreamland. – Kenji Fujishima, Slant Magazine, Nov 7, 2016

Pleasantly surprised

Went into this pretty skeptical, since Robert Schwartzman is now the 90th member of the Copppla/Schwartzman family to get into directing, but it's a really sweet movie with an excellent score. Great cast.

Beautiful, creative, inspiring and brilliant!!!

So grateful to have another creative project by Robert Schwartzman. Dreamland's score was so beautifully crafted with the entire story along with the 80's vibe/color! The story has a way of allowing you to feel a personal connection with Monty, pondering your own dreams and direction in life. I love the passion I was able to feel for my own goals when I saw Monty trying for his own. This movie, the cast and entire crew deserves the highest praise and if you have the chance, watch it!!! You will not be disappointed. Thank you for this beautiful film.

I have to say, this movie hit all the spots for me. It was incredibly funny, unique, heartfelt and relevant. The acting was amazing!!
