About the Movie

Robert Downey Jr. plays Peter Highman, an expectant first-time father whose wife's due date is only days away. As he hurries to catch a flight home to Los Angeles from Atlanta to be at her side for the birth, his best intentions go completely awry when a chance encounter with aspiring actor and disaster-magnet Ethan Tremblay (Zach Galifianakis) leads to the two of them being tossed off the plane and placed on a no-fly list...while Peter's luggage, wallet and ID take off without him. With no alternatives in sight, Peter is forced to hitch a ride with Ethan and his canine traveling companion on what turns out to be a cross-country road trip that will destroy several cars, numerous friendships and Peter's last nerve.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: As in the most useless sitcoms, the laffs depend entirely on someone behaving as ridiculously as possible, in uninteresting ways devised by the dullest minds. – Kyle Smith, New York Post, Nov 5, 2010

Rotten: Phillips seems to have forgotten that bawdy comedy is only deemed "edgy" if it's funny. When the seedy jokes fall flat, the result is crass. – James Berardinelli, ReelViews, Nov 5, 2010

Fresh: Due Date is funny enough, but it should have been funnier. – Tom Long, Detroit News, Nov 5, 2010

Rotten: Todd Phillips needs to get off the road. – Stephen Whitty, Newark Star-Ledger, Nov 5, 2010

This movie is the new hangover. It's funny all the way through. I highly recommend this movie if you love comedy and laughing so hard you cry

Offbeat and Awesome

Due Date had a lot of hype to be the next big thing for Hangover director Todd Phillips. It did not come close to it, but what we got instead was something to be admired. Its pretty much a remake of Plains, Trains and Automobiles, a film that pioneered the buddy road trip film. Zach Galifinakis has found his comfort zone in this movie, officially apart of the mainstream and not afraid to go places he hadn't gone before, which works in moderation. Robert Downey Jr. does a great job playing the straight man, almost as good as Steve Martin did with a little bit of edge added in. I laughed for the majority of this film, and the scenes that were somewhat laugh free were nonetheless amusing. Be prepared for some pretty dark material here, its not all giggles and ha-has as The Hangover was, it goes a little deep into the characters of Ethan Tremblay and his dead father which he carries around in a coffee can. I heard plenty of mixed criticism around this movie and even witnessed a couple walking out of the theater when I saw this movie. Its not as offensively bad as people say it is. In fact, its such a great fun movie to watch.

How can people abhor this movie???

I admit this movie contains a lot of angry stupidity.. but when an actor becomes famous for their films, they sort of begin to fit into their own mold, zack galifinakis has a knack for playing a character displaying stupidity while Robert Downey Jr. has a this sarcastic attitude within him.

If you didn't think this movie was funny, and did not enjoy it because of that, then look to the 'urn' side of the story and the 'expected baby' side. not all movies were made to be 100% jocular in a shrewd way, but this is a journey about two men with a bunch of shenanigans along the way... speaking of which, The Hangover? Waiting? Harold & Kumar?

This movie wasn't the best I've seen but it definitely does not deserve a 40% for rotten tomatoes.
