Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Suffers from a crippling lack of back story and characters whose relationships are fraught with unexplained complexity.
Rotten: "Blood" feels perfunctory, needing something besides fussy plotting to jolt it to life.
Fresh: While hardly reinventing the wheel, "Blood" works best as a tone poem, with unspoken passages detailing a hard life.
Fresh: "Blood" may not be wholly original, but it is effective.
I don't understand all of the positive reviews
I am a huge fan of this rivalry and I have read Will Blythe's terrific book on the subject, but this documentary is simply terrible. 90% of it is random fan after random fan telling you over and over again how much they like either Duke or UNC (and dislike the other) and how wonderful the rivalry is. Obviously the vast majority of viewers share these opinions already, and this should be the jumping off point for the movie, not its entire subject matter for 90 minutes. There is very little footage or analysis of the actual basketball games themselves and very few interviews with the actual players from those games. The documentary also barely scratches the surface of the rivalries' history or the reasons it is so heated. It seemed like the filmmaker didn't want to delve into anything challenging or controversial, so there is no depth to the portrayal of his subject matter and the movie winds up being one long bore (and that is saying something if you knew what a fan I am of the topic). I don't know what film everybody else was watching, but I recommend you skip it and go read Blythe's book instead.
Gets the "Blue" Ribbon!
This is a terrific new approach to the storied rivalry between Carolina and Duke. It is from a fan's perspective, which many times is forgotten in the usual coverage of the best rivalry in sports. If this film can't get you pumped up for the annual game, nothing will!
To hate like this is to be happy forever!
Let's face it…tons of articles, books, commentaries, interviews, films, etc. have all covered the storied rivalry that is Carolina-Duke. This one stands out from the crowd covering the WHOLE experience…the one intangible that you can't adequately explain to outsiders until the feel it for themselves. I enjoyed every second of this documentary…except those when Duke was winning…or really anything about THAT school.
