About the Movie
Legendary producer-director Howard Hawks teams with two equally legendary stars, John Wayne and Robert Mitchum, in this classic Western drama. Mitchum plays to perfection an alcoholic but gutsy sheriff who relentlessly battles the dark side of the wild West, ruthless cattle barons and crooked "businessmen." The Duke gives an equally adept performance as the sheriff's old friend who knows his way around a gunfight. Filled with brawling action and humour, El Dorado delivers the goods. James Caan and Ed Asner co-star.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: An excellent oater drama, laced with adroit comedy and action relief, and set off by strong casting, superior direction and solid production.
Fresh: Hawks makes a familiar plot resound strangely with a new set of sexual overtones.
Fresh: Howard Hawks is too good a director to depend upon stereotyped violence to keep the interest of the audience, and his well-made scenes between Wayne, Mitchum, Arthur Hunicutt and James Cann never lag for a moment.
Fresh: Wayne and Mitchum pair up for the first time in a western, and very good it is too.
Not just another Rio Bravo...
This movie is a sort of remake of Rio Bravo. I think El Dorado is better, though. The timeline is not so concise, but the actors have better chemistry, and there is just the right balance of fun and suspense. It is quite possibly my favourite movie of all time.
Wayne at his best
Wayne is at his best just being himself. Cast is perfect, the story is simple, it's bad guys vs. good guys. In short it's a Howard Hawks masterpiece.
I can watch this movie again and again. The comedy is spot-on; the action is fulfilling; the romance isn't half-bad, especially for a Wayne movie (although Caan's is rather subtle at times). See this movie! You won't regret it. It's one of the best westerns ever made.
