About the Movie

From the writer of Training Day comes a gripping, action-packed cop drama starring Academy Award® nominee Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña. In their mission to abide by their oath to serve and protect, Officers Brian Taylor (Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Peña) have formed a powerful brotherhood to ensure they both go home at the end of watch. But nothing can prepare them for the violent backlash that happens after they pull over the members of a notorious drug cartel for a routine traffic stop. Seen from the point of view of the officers, gang members, surveillance cameras, dash cams and citizens caught in the line of fire, a 360° perspective creates a gritty, compassionate and intense portrait of the city’s darkest streets, and the brave men and women patrolling them.

Fresh: Gyllenhaal and Pena are after a lived-in camaraderie and a street-level realism. Pena, especially, succeeds; you buy him every second. – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune, Jan 8, 2013

Fresh: The actors, both excellent, get right into Ayer's groove. So by the time we arrive at the unsparing climax, we really know and care about these guys. – Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News, Jan 8, 2013

Rotten: Despite the violence and procedural detail, this is about as gritty as Dixon of Dock Green. – Peter Bradshaw, Guardian, Nov 22, 2012

WELCOME TO THE STREETS

I'm from Manhattan, and lets just say I know and seen what really goes on. Tourists are oblivious to the crime factor. Subways, ghettoes and all that. However, although I'm not from California this film truly shows the danger cops go trough every single day. It's fantastic. The actors are fantastic too! I loved it. I could relate to it.

A TENSE, EXCITING, AND EMOTIONAL COP DRAMA

Now, I'll be honest. I didn't exactly have the highest expectations for "End of Watch" when I decided to go see it with a couple of friends. Despite the "found-footage" camera gimmick of its premise and a likable cast, nothing really seemed to stand out about the film. But boy, was I in for a surprise. This action-packed police thriller ended up being one of the most entertaining and immersive experiences I've had at the movies all year. Plunging its viewers right onto the grimy streets of L.A., the film follows a pair of LAPD officers and longtime best friends (Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peńa) who discover a secret that makes them the prime targets of a dangerous drug cartel, one that won't go down without a fight. What makes this movie such an engaging ride throughout isn't the gritty cinematography or even the brutally shocking action sequences, but rather, the genuine chemistry that Gyllenhaal and Peńa share as on-duty/off-duty partners. They're hugely convincing in the way they interact, whether it's just them making each other laugh with snappy insults while sitting in a police cruiser for hours on end, or the two of them risking both life and limb in the heat of gunfire to save one another. The bond they share is simply magnetic, and it ends up being the entire driving force of the film. As for everyone else in the cast, they're generally underwritten (particularly Anna Kendrick and an unrecognizable America Ferrera), although this is understandable given that this movie solely relies on the strengths of its two leading men. It also thrives just as much on the grisly, uncompromising violence that seeps into every scene. The brutality in this film is so realistic, it was enough to make me cringe in my seat at times. Unfortunately, the flick isn't quite as strong in the storytelling department as it should be. The basic crime plot is a tad conventional and the narrative feels slightly episodic, while the conclusion just left me with somewhat of an empty feeling. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed "End of Watch" for the majority of what it delivered. Sure, the camera format, despite its clever usage, can wear thin after a while, but thanks to its energetic action scenes, authentic bloodshed, and devotion to characters, this film acts as both a convincing and emotional portrayal of police life, and the buddy dynamic between Gyllenhaal and Peña is hugely entertaining. I definitely recommend giving it a watch for any fan of visceral, realistic filmmaking.

BEST COP MOVIE EVER!!!

This movie kept it real & raw. It shows everything from the fun, emotional & dangerous sides of what its like to really be a cop. I mean it almost feels like your actually there with these guys throughout the whole movie. I loved the found footage aspect of this movie I feel it worked very well & I don't think it would have felt the same had it not been that way. Also Jake Gyllenhaal & Michael Pena just earned a hell of a lot more respect as actors from me. They gave award winning preformances & deserve hella praise!!! Overall this was an amazing movie it's funny, exciting, & occasionaly disturbing & terrifying, but very moving all at the same time! Definitely rent/buy this as soon as it's released!! You won't be disappointed!!!
