About the Movie

40-Year-Old Virgin star Steve Carell reprises his role as preening newscaster Evan Baxter in this heavenly sequel to the 2003 Jim Carrey comedy hit. Shortly after television anchorman-turned-U.S. congressman Evan Baxter (Carell) relocates his family from Buffalo to Northern Virginia, God (Morgan Freeman) reveals to him that a devastating flood is coming and the planet is about to be cleansed once again. Later, when Baxter accepts the responsibility of building a great ark and his rapidly changing physical appearance begins to draw media attention, his skeptical family attempts to discern if his actions are driven by delusion or divine intervention. John Goodman, Wanda Sykes, Jonah Hill, and Molly Shannon co-star in a divine comedy of truly epic proportions.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Evan Almighty in which Steve Carell is commanded by God (Morgan Freeman) to build an ark, is a movie far less interesting than its premise. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: It's an almighty, humorless bore. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Sep 1, 2007

Rotten: This is PG-rated proselytizing tinged with Al Gore self-righteousness, all with the narrative thrust of a film about the apocalypse starring Kirk Cameron. – Robert Wilonsky, Village Voice, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Evan Almighty belongs to that sorry cinema subgenre, Comedy without the Funny Bits. – Jonathan F. Richards,, Jun 24, 2010

What were you thinking, Steve Carell?

I saw this in the local movie theatre last year with some of my cousins (there was a huge family reunion) the night after we saw Ratatouille in the same theatre. I thought at first this was going to be decent because I liked the preceding movie, Bruce Almighty. To my dismay (Steve Carell, what in the H-E-double-hockey-sticks were you thinking when you were cast in this?) it's just about as sad as any other movie released today. VERY mediocre. I think this movie is supposed to impose religion on other people; I'm an Athiest so I take great offense to this. Not much of this happened in Bruce Almighty, however. TO THE POINT: This movie should have been sent to the burn pile during the writing process. I don't mind that people are comfortable with all the Christian impliments this movie offers, I'm just saying that it's not for everyone.

Not Cool....

The worst movie i ever saw in my entire life. It was from Bruce Almighty basically, at least Bruce Almighy was the best movie ever with Jim Carrey. :) I have to say. I didn't understand it at the beginning it was so confusing..

I love this movie. It's super cute and it's pretty dang funny. Lauren Graham is great in this movie (though I wish she was in it a little more), and Steve Carell is funny as his beard keeps growing continuously. :)
