Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Sure, this is a higher-budget re-tread. But a remake shouldn't exist simply to ramp up the graphic violence, even if special effects have improved immeasurably in the past 30 years. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Apr 5, 2013

Fresh: What this "Evil Dead" gets most right is its tone, paying homage yet staking its own territory; it's scary without being downbeat, fun without being too jokey. – Mark Olsen, Los Angeles Times, Apr 4, 2013

Fresh: An effectively relentless gore-fest. – Bruce Diones, New Yorker, Apr 15, 2013

Fresh: Raimi set the bar high, and if Alvarez can't quite rise to his level, he overcompensates by drowning everything in blood. It's overkill, but in this case that's not such a bad thing. – Adam Graham, Detroit News, Apr 5, 2013

This movie was ok. Not very scary or as fun as the original was, but I still found it enjoyable and entertaining for the most part. It's mostly just bloody and gory which is cool, but I was never freaked out like I was when I saw the original one. It didn't have that classic feel to it either it just felt like most modern horror movies that are rushed and have more style over substance (or in this case more bloody gore over substance). As far as acting goes Jane Levy did an awesome job as the lead and seemed believable while Shiloh Fernandez still can't act, but looked hot as hell. Still I wasn't blown away. Overall I found the new Evil Dead was nothing special, but for horror fans it's still a fun movie that's worth watching.

Gory greatness!

Love Jane Levy and Jessica Lucas !! It can never and will never touch the original. That being said, it's a standalone film all on its own. Judge for yourself.

Evil Dead for the new Generation

This is one of the most enjoyable horror movies I have ever seen in recent years along with the V/H/S series. This Evil Dead is it's own thing. You can't expect it to be the exact same thing as the original because then you'll be expecting the same scares and stuff. This movie holds its own when it comes to the scares and blood. There is a LOT of blood by the way haha. You gotta watch this if you're a fan of horror movies!
