Plot Summary

In the late ‘80s, the masses fixated on a single, sociopathic star. Morton Downey Jr. tore apart the traditional talk format by turning debate of current issues into a gladiator pit. His blow-smoke-in-your-face style drew a rabid cult following, but also the title “Father of Trash Television.”

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: What remains of its subject ... is the melancholy image of a onetime poet and liberal who longed to sing but in the end could only talk. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Jun 7, 2013

Fresh: This sharp documentary tribute to Downey's bug-eyed, fulminating charisma - he was like a Nixon who'd let out his id - reveals the demons that drove him to fame, then dragged him down. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Oct 2, 2013

Fresh: Friends and former colleagues address the lingering question of whether Downey was being sincere or engaging in an elaborate form of performance art. (The answer: By the end of the show's run, Downey himself could scarcely tell the difference anymore.) – Scott Foundas, Variety, Jun 17, 2013

Fresh: Despite the shrieking Valkyries on the soundtrack, Evocateur is as fair a portrayal as the weak-chinned warrior will get -- and fairer than he deserves. – Amy Nicholson, Los Angeles Times, Jun 30, 2013

Great film!

Everyone knows that Mort was a little "over the top" sometimes. But I was always a fan of the show. Too bad it went off the air when it did. Critics just have to accept the show for what it was - politics with a twist of over the top entertainment. Would strongly recommend this film.

Nostalgic & Enlightening

I used to have to sit through this show with my dad for what seemed like every night in 7th and 8th grade. This film shines a light on a very controversial figure who sort of faded into obscurity as quickly as he rose to national popularity. But then it goes a step further in drawing parallels to the voices of today. It's definitely worth watching.

Great Film!

I remember watching Mort on WWOR Channel 9 out of Secaucus when I was a kid. That show was beyond wild! If Mort had Bill O'Reiley on, Bill would have had a knife & a hostage ten minutes in, begging Mort to leave him alone.
