Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Mr. Boorman takes these myths very seriously, but he has used them with a pretentiousness that obscures his vision. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Nov 6, 2013

Fresh: Give Boorman credit for the loopy grandeur of his imagery and imaginings, for the sweet smell of excess, for his heroic gamble that a movie can dare to trip over its pretensions -- and still fly. – Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine, Nov 6, 2013

Fresh: Exquisite, a near-perfect blend of action, romance, fantasy and philosophy, finely acted and beautifully filmed by director John Boorman and cinematographer Alex Thomson. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: There is humor here (in the form of a vaudeville Merlin, played by Nicol Williamson) as well as a diminution of scale that seems intended to help audiences through the thornier byways of Boorman's vision. – Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader, Nov 6, 2013

Fun Movie

I find that this movie is a fun watch it was great when it first came out... The armor is over rated not the right time period buy it does have some really fun watchablity and merlin is a hoo with all his comic undertones.... If not for the sex scenes in a couple of spots it would be a great family movie...But playboy named the sex scenes as the worst in history of sex and

Wonderful...but for lousy sex scene....

One of my favorite movies ever...unfortunately there is a sex scene early in the move that with a little editing could have made this a great one for the family. This is a film that all lovers of knights, castles and good vs. evil will enjoy. Remember to edit one scene early in the movie for young eyes...

The Best of Arthur

A fun version of the Arthur legend. Well done in all aspects. The description in the sales paragraph above lends one to believe that Liam Neeson is the star of the movie. Let us make it clear that Nigel Terry plays King Arthur, Neeson plays Gawain.
