About the Movie
Engaging, emotional and riveting, FAREWELL is an intricate and highly intelligent thriller pulled from the pages of history— about an ordinary man thrust into the biggest theft of Soviet information of the Cold War. Ronald Reagan called this piece of history - largely unknown until now - “one of the most important espionage cases of the 20th century.” FAREWELL begins in 1981, after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. A French businessman based in Moscow, Pierre Froment, (Guillaume Canet) makes an unlikely connection with Grigoriev (Emir Kusturica), a senior KGB officer disenchanted with what the Communist ideal has become under Brezhnev. Grigoriev begins passing Froment highly sensitive information about the Soviet spy network in the US.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: [A] smart, low-key, melancholy dramatization based on a little-known real moment in espionage, circa 1981...
Fresh: An ideal corrective to the usual overblown espionage fantasies, and one that works very well on its own stealthy terms.
Fresh: More than most espionage movies, the film is about relationships, the men with each other, the men with their own disapproving wives, and governments with each other.
Rotten: Beware the thriller whose characters are more naive than the audience.
Farewell is fantastically well done.
Farewell is a fantastic espionage thriller-twice as much because it's based on real events during the Cold War. It would probably be worth reading a little bit online somewhere about the history of the events in this movie to have a better understanding of the plot as a whole. Definitely worth the time watching.
This movie is great! Very interesting story line. I caught it at a small independent movie theatre and had to wait an entire year before iTunes began to carry it. I thought about having it imported at times, but the wait to own this was well worth the money. Definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys a good historical thriller.
a great Cold War movie
Just when you think the Cold War theme has been exhausted for movies, you find a gem like this……this is a great film based on a gripping story. It makes one better appreciate why spies risked everything during the Cold War. Highly recommended.
