Plot Summary

Raising a child in New York City proves daunting for a massage therapist (Diane Lane), especially when the father is miles away in South America conducting field work on the Yanomamo tribe, also known as "fierce people." When a rich family wants to hire her as a personal masseuse, she accepts, thinking it'll shield her teenage son from the troubles of a more pedestrian life. But tragedy soon teaches her that high society is a jungle too.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: When F. Scott Fitzgerald remarked that the rich "are different from you and me," he might have been thinking of someone like the moody billionaire from Fierce People. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: Fierce People is based on a forced premise: the idea that a family of super-rich New Jersey eccentrics is like a tribe to be studied anthropologically. None of the characters resembles any creature you'd discover in nature, however. – Christy Lemire, Associated Press, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: The idea that rich people are an alien tribe is just one of many that get lost in Wittenborn's distracted script. – Tasha Robinson, Chicago Tribune, Oct 20, 2007

Rotten: There are lots of potent things floating around in it -- sexual initiation, drugs, fantasy-land wealth, brute violence, primitive rituals, Diane Lane and Donald Sutherland -- but the mix just sits there without producing any notable reactions. – Steven Winn, San Francisco Chronicle, Sep 22, 2007

On Target

Having grown up on the outskirts of the north east uber-affluent in the 1980's as a boarding school kid, I will opinion that this movie is spot on. It especially well captured the clash of innocence, wealth, drug use, and sociopathic violence so prevalent at the time. Once again Dunne has created a film featuring people I could swear I knew.

Love Kristen Stewart (only reason I watched this movie) and I'm so glad I got to see this! It was awesome, kristen stewart was brillant along with her co-stars. Very comical but a drama at the same time, theres even a bit of CSI in there. I reccomended it to everyone

Great Movie

Kristen Stewart is my favorite actress, and she showed why with her performance in this film surrounded by more experienced actors.
