Plot Summary

Small-town boy Shawn MacArthur (Channing Tatum, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Public Enemies) knows firsthand that every day in New York City is a struggle to survive. So when scam artist Harvey Boarden (Terrence Howard, Iron Man, Hustle and Flow) gives him a chance to be something more in the brutal underground world of bare-knuckle street-fighting, Shawn decides that he has something worth fighting for and puts everything on the line to win. Every knockout brings him closer to the life he’s always wanted, but also traps him in a dangerous web he can’t escape.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The fights may not be very convincing, but the story's underdog structure is satisfying in a happy-cliche sort of way. Fighting is Rocky without the bombast, Fight Club without the daft metaphysical pretensions. – David Denby, New Yorker, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: There's a better movie inside it struggling to get out. – Stephen Whitty, Newark Star-Ledger, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: This is a story we've seen dozens of times before. – Ben Lyons, At the Movies, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: All of this, however, is plainly just a veneer on a solidly generic punch-up movie, and it thus becomes a drag. A more cartoonish approach would probably have been more fun. – Edward Porter, Times [UK], Jul 7, 2010

great movie

this movie is worth the money the fightin is real and hardcore but thebest part is the last fight because u can feel it like if u were fighting im tellin u get this movie now its great

Excellent!!

This movie might not have had the biggest budget or the best fight scenes (although they weren't too bad), but the story line about life: the struggles... the setbacks... the disappointments... the opportunities... and the challenges and the triumphs of life made this movie an excellent movie. The acting was decent as well considering there's a lot of newbies in this movie. It definitely resonates with the human soul about how you really need to fight for yourself and what you believe in regardless of whether anybody believes in you or not. So yeah, I really enjoyed it. Like I said, it could have been better with probably a better budget etc., but all things considered... I thought it was great!!
