Filly Brown is an inspiring and gritty portrait of a young artist striving to find her voice and seize her dreams without compromise. Majo Tonorio, aka, “Filly Brown” is a young, raw hip-hop artist who spits rhymes from the heart. With a mother in prison and a father struggling to provide for his daughters, Majo knows that a record contract could be her family’s ticket out. But when a record producer offers her a shot at stardom, she is suddenly faced with the prospect of losing who she is as an artist, as well as the friends who helped her reach the cusp of success. Fueled by a fierce hip-hop score, Filly Brown is propelled by an exceptional cast featuring Gina Rodriguez, Lou Diamond Phillips, Edward James Olmos and the legendary Jenni Rivera in her final on-screen performance.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Unfortunately, the film is marred by a story, situations and stereotypical characters that strike all-too-familiar chords.
Rotten: A trite piece of storytelling, with character development and plot points that feel not so much lived in as borrowed from other movies.
Fresh: Almost despite our will, the cast keeps us invested in Filly's furious resurrection.
Fresh: Gina Rodriguez's magnetic star turn keeps this often overwrought film engaging, even when the script lets her down.
Unoriginal story and pointless
What is wrong with encouraging the next generation to get an education and be something productive and skilled in life and society, instead of encouraging them to "chase their dreams" and be rappers? One in how many millions become anything successful as a rapper, and how many of those few do anything good for society (or even themselves) and the next generation? This movie is an extremely weak attempt to glamorize something that misleads whole generations of youth with a lot of time on their hands and no direction, and keeps them from forming dreams and aspirations of being doctors, veterinarians, dentists, accountants, programmers, architects, pilots, scientists and other things that contribute to society and others in their generation and those who come after. And it's a poor, unoriginal attempt at that. And that's by someone who enjoyed the movie, music, and story of 8 Mile.
Can't wait to see. All the actors are fantastic. So sorry Jeni is not with us to célabrate. God Bless her soul.
