About the Movie

Winner of the Best of NEXT Audience Award at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, First Girl I Loved is a poignant coming-of-age tale that captures all the anxiety, bravery, and heartbreak of first love. On assignment for her high-school yearbook, social-misfit Anne (Dylan Gelula) charmingly hits it off with the beautiful star of the softball team, Sasha (Brianna Hildebrand). But when Anne tells her best friend Clifton (Mateo Arias) about her new crush, he reveals a hidden jealousy that threatens more than just the girls’ budding romance. Writer/director Kerem Sanga tells this remarkably touching story with a multifaceted style that is as fresh as it is daring. Brimming with authenticity and humor, First Girl I Loved offers a delightful, contemporary perspective on the jitters of new romance and the age-old heartbreak of love.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Sanga creatively employs a swirl of text messages, voice-overs, baseball signals and other linguistic modes to beautifully illustrate the jumble of thoughts cascading through young minds. – Peter Howell, Toronto Star, Oct 6, 2016

Fresh: Some of the behaviours on display are really quite intense, and while the film is hardly a thriller, it definitely has an edge missing from many a "cuter" coming-of-age and coming out in high school festival crowd-pleaser. – CJ Johnson, ABC Radio (Australia), Jul 13, 2017

Fresh: It's not the first teen romance to explore how the phone makes it easier to make mistakes, but it's one of the first to show us how it works as Cupid's arrow - and that offers some balance. – Paul Byrnes, Sydney Morning Herald, Jul 12, 2017

Fresh: The film's title is love-struck, but this is a deceptively wrenching story of self-discovery and honesty. – Craig Mathieson, The Sunday Age, Jul 11, 2017

WONDERFUL!

This was my favorite film at Sundance '16. It's a beautiful and genuine love story with amazing performances and great music. It's a joy to watch and will stay with you long after the final credits roll.

Well worth the purchase

I saw this movie at Sundance and was really touched by Anne's story about finding herself. Even though I'm a few years older than the main character, I found her journey very relatable and the performance of the lead actress (DYLAN GELULA of KIMMY SCHMIDT fame) dynamic.

The movie is romantic, touching, and good enough to see multiple times. You can't say this about a lot of movies these days but this one is well worth the purchase.

Sublime!

One of my favorite films I saw at Sundance this year. Dylan Gelula is an amazing actress, I hope she gets more roles like this! Brianna Hildebrand and her have great chemistry. I can't wait to see it again.
