Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: A decently executed but generic thriller ... most notable for advancing the dubious theory that the best way to help a child who is being bullied is to traumatize the heck out of him.
Rotten: Bruce Willis goes bad in a movie that could hardly be mistaken for good, playing a corrupt police chief mixed up in a bank robbery.
Rotten: The script is needlessly convoluted and filled with horrible ideas and you-knew-that-was-coming twists.
Rotten: "First Kill" is a clunker; its first and only casualty is the audience's common sense.
First Kill does not deserve the 0% on Rotten tomatoes that it currently has... much better than that. It's very intense, fast paced, and worth the watch.
I did not come to this movie expecting much, mainly due to the apparent low budget and Bruce Willice's appeareance in a lot of less than good movies of late. I was pleasantly surprised though. Sure, don't come to this movie expecting Die Hard levels of gunshot and action, but that's the point. This movie offers a nice balance of story, action and thriller that really work. The cinematography is nice, with the movie being shot in Granville, Ohio. Hayden Christenen delivers an excellend performance along with Gethin Anthony. Very worthy of your time.
First Kill is Entertaining
I think one of the pitfalls of being a movie critic is forgetting that you watch movies just for the fun of it and not just for the review of it. As a movie fan, I watch a lot of movies just for the fun of it. First Kill is a good entertaining movie with a good story and more than enough thrills and suspense. Beautiful location and cinematography. Good acting, directing and a great shootout scene. I'm not a big fan of jerky camera moves but I can see it being useful at times, although I think "less is more". Overall a good Friday night at the movies.
